As autumn settles in, we marvel at the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that beautifully adorn the trees. In Texas, we may not experience the same sweeping displays of color found in other parts of the country, but we still appreciate the changing colors we are fortunate to witness. There’s something breathtaking about walking under a canopy of autumn hues! But have you ever wondered how these brilliant colors come to life? I find the process fascinating—a reflection of God’s incredible design! I believe there are lessons buried within creation, and the changing colors of the leaves are no exception.
Indulge this former teacher as I briefly explain. We usually picture trees with green leaves. The green results from chlorophyll, the pigment that captures sunlight and converts it into energy for the tree to grow. However, as autumn days grow shorter, there is less sunlight, which causes chlorophyll production to slow and eventually stop. Without the constant replenishment of green pigment, the chlorophyll breaks down. This allows the hidden carotenoids (which produce yellows and oranges) and anthocyanins (responsible for reds and purples) to shine through.
These other pigments were there all along, quietly waiting beneath the surface. When the need for chlorophyll fades, the trees reveal their hidden beauty, bursting into glorious colors that take our breath away!
Just as the pigments in autumn leaves are revealed in their season, so too is the work God does within us. Sometimes, the busyness of life keeps us from slowing down to notice the beauty God has been cultivating in us. It often takes a season of change for these “colors” to emerge—qualities God has nurtured within us all along.
Transitions can be hard. It’s difficult to let go of the familiar, whether watching your children grow up, moving to a new place, letting go of a dream, or losing a job. These changes may bring grief, but they also reveal hidden strengths and beauty within us, such as:
Resilience – Discovering strength you didn’t know you had during challenging times.
Compassion – Developing deeper empathy as you become attuned to the struggles of others.
Faith – Cultivating a stronger reliance on God amid uncertainty.
Patience – Learning to trust the process, even when growth isn’t immediately visible.
Creativity – Uncovering fresh ideas and approaches sparked by the need for change.
Gratitude – Gaining a deeper appreciation for the lessons learned and the growth experienced.
Like hidden gems, these qualities often rise to the surface during seasons of change, showing that God has been working in us all along.
The turning of the leaves reminds us of God’s faithfulness. He knows exactly when to bring out new colors in our lives—colors we may not have realized were there. In times of change or uncertainty, we can rest in the truth that God is in control and has a purpose for every season. His design for your life is more beautiful than you can imagine!
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)
Take a moment to reflect on the hidden work God is doing in your life. What “colors” has He been cultivating within you?
